Both methods exclude from income those receipts/billings for other than business operations (i.ie. contributions from owners, stock subscriptions, etc.). They also exclude those payments/bills for other than deductible expenses (i.e. principal loan payments, withdrawals by owners, inventory purchases, etc.). Many businesses use the Cash method for tax reporting purposes and the Accrual method for financial statement purposes. |

| RER | Revise Existing Relationship |
| RES | Residual Disability |
| Rescission | After a policy has been put into force the company finds out that false information was given on the policy application. In these situations, we “buy back” the policy from the policyholder by refunding all premiums paid to date. Consequently, all commissions and commission credits are reversed from the producer back to the issue date of the policy. |
| Reservation of Rights | A legal term which means that our provision of benefits cannot be interpreted as an acceptance of past, present or future liability; and that we have reserved all of our legal rights, including the right to recover these benefits if appropriate to do so. |

| Residual disability | A provision built into some income protection policies (and available as an option with others) that pays a portion of the total disability benefit to insureds who are unable to perform one or more of their occupational duties as a result of disability. Unlike partial disability, there is no period of total disability required to trigger benefit payments. (Not applicable for California policies.) |
| Respite care | Care provided to the insured for a short period of time to allow his/her informal caregiver a break from caregiving responsibilities. |
| Restrictions | Activities that an individual should not do |

| Retention | In an Experience Refund Arrangement, retention is the percentage of every dollar of premium that is allocated to cover all expenses, including the contingency charge and profit. |
| Retirement plan | A plan which provides retirement benefits to employees and which is not funded wholly by employee contributions. |
| Retrospective Premium Arrangement | The insurance company reduces its monthly premium by an amount which is equal to the margin for claims fluctuation. It is simply an agreement by the insurer to not include the margin in the premium charged to the case at the beginning of the year. The policyholder agrees to pay the margin to the insurer at year end if it turns out that claims did fluctuate on the high side and the margin really was necessary. |
