Cash vs. Accrual Accounting The difference in these accounting methods revolves around the timing for recording income and expense for the business. The Cash method reports, as income, all cash received during the period and as expense all cash paid out during the same time. The Accrual method reports, as income, all fees earned during the period and as expense all bills incurred during the same timeframe. Both methods exclude from income those receipts/billings for other than business operations (i.ie. contributions from owners, stock subscriptions, etc.). They also exclude those payments/bills for other than deductible expenses (i.e. principal loan payments, withdrawals by owners, inventory purchases, etc.). Many businesses use the Cash method for tax reporting purposes and the Accrual method for financial statement purposes.

Indexed monthly earnings Insured's monthly earnings adjusted on each anniversary of benefit payments as described in the plan. The insured's indexed monthly earnings may increase or remain the same, but will never decrease. Indexing is only used to determine the insured's percentage of lost earnings while he/she is disabled and working.
Indexing Indexing is a built-in benefit that allows the monthly benefit amount to increase as the CPI increases. This helps the insured automatically keep up with inflation.
Individual plan The product(s), provisions, and values selected by, or provided for, an individual based on his/her participation in an eligibility group.

Integration In an STD/LTD policy, it is the general practice that income benefits from other sources will reduce the benefits under the disability plan. Unum's STD/LTD policy integrates with (or reduces our benefit payments by) income received from items shown in the "What are Deductible Sources of other Income Benefits" section of the contract. This provision is intended to prevent an excessive replacement of income while disabled (over-insurance), which may not encourage an employee to return to work as quickly.

Last-In, First-Out Inventory costing method that means for inventory costing purposes, the business uses the most recent costs paid to determine its cost of goods sold. On a period of rising prices, this method is a good strategy, because the most recent prices will always exceed earlier prices paid and cost of goods sold under this method is generally higher than under the FIFO method. The inventory shown on the balance sheet is understated, compared to realistic replacement values.

Pooling The process of collecting claims data on many, many people and looking at the results. This is called a manual rate structure.
Pooling limits Pooling limits are defined levels of liability in an Experience Refund case. Liability below the pooling limit for a particular case is included in the dividend account process which occurs at year-end and determines whether a dividend or a deficit has occurred.
